Doreen Ambrose-Van Lee, a poet and former resident of Chicago's Cabrini-Green housing project who writes about her experiences growing up there, capturing the contrasting sides of the community in her poetry and in the title of her book Diary of a MidWestern Getto Gurl. She is a founding member of the North Austin Public Library Poetry Group and holds a degree in print journalism.

About Doreen Ambrose-Van Lee

Background:Ambrose-Van Lee grew up in Cabrini-Green during the 1970s and 80s.
Literary Works:She is the author of Diary of a MidWestern Getto Gurl and uses her poetry to process both the positive and negative aspects of her childhood in the housing project.
Education and Military Service:She earned a BA in print journalism from Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville and also served in the U.S. Armed Forces.
Community Involvement:She is a founding member of the North Austin Public Library Poetry Group on the west side of Chicago.

A Complex Home:Ambrose-Van Lee describes Cabrini-Green as a home where a "village was raising her," but also a place of tragedy.
Processing Memories:Her work serves as a way to make sense of her memories and experiences, whether it was feeling loved and supported or witnessing violence and hardship.
Humanizing Public Housing:She emphasizes that behind the negative reputation of public housing projects, there were real lives and home
